“Thais are Lucky to Have Abhisit as Prime Minister.”

2010

The above picture is the cover image of this week’s Matichon Sudsapda (aka Matichon Weekly). The caption reads: “Thais are lucky to have Abhisit as Prime Minister”. The rest of the cover depicts a row of coffins painted in red as a small crowd of red-shirted protesters at Bangkok’s Democracy Monument look on.

The caption is, I believe, a reference to General Prem’s initial reaction to Abhisit assuming the premiership in 2008 (see here and here). As The Nation reported back then:

Privy Council President Prem Tinsulanonda said Sunday that Thailand is lucky to have Abhisit Vejjajiva as its prime minister.

He said he is confident that Abhisit will be able to solve the country’s problems with cooperation from all Thais.

“I am glad to have the prime minister named Abhisit. I think other Thais are also glad. But Thais are still frightened. We will wait and see what the prime minister can give them in the time to come,” Prem said.

I suppose the question one should ask is “lucky to have Abhisit instead of whom?” Prem? Surayud? Satan?

Turns out the amartya have not been so very lucky, Abhisit is going to bring the whole corrupt and disgraceful edifice crashing down around their ears.

I think the offer from Abhisit to Red shirt is the true result to the problem.
Changes like this takes more than red shirt group to decide, have to be look
at carefully and alot input from all side including people who is not on the red
shirt team. I feels a sence of trust in abhisit to work think out for benefit of all
Thai people. I feell the reasons he’s not quiting is to help community. I would never
vote for any of the red shirt leader for this job. I am thankful for the red shirt communit to be out there protesting and risking lossing life while all I can do is
washing what will happen next. So now goverment is looking to better the system
and I trust Abhisit to look over this complain and fix. If not Abhisit than who?
We have the good guy on our team now lets make use of this situation to help each
other fix this problem. To remove him maybe the redshirt leader maybe expecting
some self serving reward. They may have invested money on this situation. may be
that’s why they need this done so fast because they are running out of money or maybe people will start to calm down from anger from thaksin.
It’s just no reason to fire Abhisit he’s doing a good job.
Stop the madness and talk about it. All red shirt that are marching is doing their job
exercising their right, but I’m afraid thier leader is now no longer worthy of them
Take a rest looking at all the leader again and listen to all side. Then go again
It is clear now to goverment and other country see the problem. Be clear of your
goal, take a rest to see everything look at Abhisit can he do the job? Looking at
everything that’s true and false. So that all of your marching for goodness will not
go in waste, What you guy did is curadges and pure, I feels some of your leader
need to be look at don’t let them use your power for badness. Please look at the
true and the false the good and the bad, so that all your sacrified is not invain.
You guy the marcher are a hero your power will lead to good or to bad not only
just for one individual but for the whole country.
I pray that someone will read this, and let thier be light to shine your way.
Please take a rest and do internal thinking, then move on again.
Use your power wisely so it will cause good for Thailand.

Well, if that’s true, I may say it is also correct to say that Cambodia is lucky to have Hun Sen and Burma is lucky to have Thanswe.
